In the heart of Venice, where art, culture, and holiness come together.
Established as a confraternity in 1478, the Scuola Grande di San Rocco was officially proclaimed a Great School by the Council of Ten of the Most Serene Republic of Venice in 1480. In 1485 the confraternity came into possession of a relic of the body of San Rocco; as a result, between 1517 and 1549 a new location was provided: it is one of Venice’s most significant buildings, housing the largest collection of works by Jacopo Tintoretto.
Tintoretto’s magnificent work, having evolved over three periods of the artist’s creative life, from 1546 to 1587, adorn three areas in the church: the Sala dell’Albergo, the Sala Superiore, and the Sala Terrena.
...one of the most fascinating pictorial challenges of any age, and for its uniqueness represents for Venice that which Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel represents for Rome.
